Potsdam is known for its palaces and their beautiful gardens, but also its city centre has a lot to offer. The town arose around the baroque residence of the Great Elector Frederick William, and later became the most important garrison of the Prussian Kings. Frederick the Great embellished Potsdam considerably and made it a charming place of European renown. Also the recent history, such as the destructions during the Second World War, the partial urban renewal by East Germany’s authorities and the current trend towards the reconstruction of the old cityscape will be presented on our sightseeing tour. Furthermore you’ll experience the royal atmosphere of Sanssouci Park during a short stop. In no other place in Germany can the history of Prussia and its rulers be so vividly understood as in Potsdam.

Berlin, city of architecture
From Schlüter to Chipperfield – Urban planning and architectural highlights through the eras.
This tour offers an overview of Berlin’s architectural history. It offers insight into the guidelines for urban development that have influenced Berlin until today as well as information on current projects. One focus is on historic Mitte, where you’ll find remnants of the city’s early days and many magnificent Hollenzollern era buildings in stark contrast to wartime changes and radical transformation the area underwent as capital of East Germany. Since the reunification, this has been a central area for urban planning, covering a wide range of strategic planning, from the reconstruction of historical buildings to the design of skyscraper districts. We continue on to major projects from the 1990s, such as Potsdamer Platz, the government district and the area around Berlin Central Station. The changes happening on the banks of the Spree river in Friedrichhain (Mediaspree) as well as the extensive remodeling of City West will also be explored.

1920s housing estates
Garden cities and large housing estates – Berlin’s new housing ideas during the Weimar Republic.
In the early 20th century a large percentage of the Berliners had to endure atrocious living conditions. Therefore, the city had been denounced as the “largest tenement city in the world”. Spurred on by the housing shortage and back courtyard misery, social reformers and architects worked to create new forms of housing and living. Thus, during the Weimar Republic, Berlin became an experimental breeding ground for modern housing. Although initially inspired by the garden city movement, the focus soon shifted to creating large housing estates on affordable land on the city outskirts. Because of this, a bus tour is necessary to visit several estates. Our architectural tour will show you many outstanding projects, including several World Heritage estates such as Gartenstadt Falkenberg, Bruno Taut’s Hufeisensiedlung (Horseshoe Estate), the Weiße Stadt (White City) with buildings from Salvisberg, as well as Siemensstadt, built by the architects Scharoun, Gropius and Häring.

Nazi architecture
Construction boom under the Swastika – Berlin as a preferred building location in the Nazi era.
When it comes to dealing with Nazi era architecture in Berlin, many people first and foremost think of Hitler’s megalomaniac redevelopment plans – the failed “Germania” project. However, many buildings had been erected independently from these plans and still exist. As a matter of fact, Berlin’s status as the capital had led to flourishing construction activities since 1933. The Nazi regime used the building policies—accompanied by targeted propaganda—to stage its claim to power within the German Reich and its public image internationally. This bus trip offers the opportunity to discover a series of main projects, which are scattered all over the city. Among the buildings are monumental style structures for the government, for administrative organizations and private contractors or venues for staging mass events and infrastructure projects, such as the former Reich Air Ministry, Fehrbelliner Platz, the Olympic Stadium and Exhibition Grounds, as well as Tempelhof Airport. Last but not least some of the general guidelines of the “Germania” plans will be explained.

Berlin during the Cold War
GDR capital versus frontline West Berlin – Architecture and urban planning in divided Berlin.
This bus tour presents the change and diversity of urban development ideas in East and West Berlin between 1945 and 1989. The projects were often opposite in nature and influenced by competing political ideology, such as Stalinallee and Hansaviertel – the two most prestigious housing projects of the 1950s. But there were also some cross-border similarities: the vision of a functional and modern city led to major redevelopment in the East as well as the West; during the 1970s, both sides of the city focused on returning to the historic city. In 1987, in an effort to spruce up Berlin for its 750th anniversary celebration, both sides competed to create the fanciest showcase project, which the city still benefits from today. Among other places, you will see the main urban planning area of the former East Berlin capital, reconstruction examples, “careful urban renewal” projects as well as those from the West Berlin IBA 1984-87.

Schinkel and his heirs
Antiquity, Gothic and Renaissance rethought – works of the Schinkel school in 19th century Berlin.
The star architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel influenced Berlin architecture long after his death.
His lasting impact on future generations was not only due to the well-deserved admiration of his exceptional talents, but also because of his work as a university professor and the architectural treaties he penned. In Berlin’s city centre, you’ll find many excellent examples of work from the Schinkel school located next to buildings designed by the master himself. This architectural tour will show you buildings designed by Ludwig Persius, Friedrich August Stüler, Eduard Knoblauch, Martin Gropius and Hermann Blankenstein, among others. It also explains how these architects further developed Schinkel’s architectural ideas as well as his concept of tradition meets innovation. These buildings will also give you a historical glimpse of Berlin as Prussia’s booming capital.
